History
The present Village Hall was constructed thanks to a generous grant from the National Lottery

How the New Village Hall came about – some recollections from Maureen Jenkins

"The old Marton Village Hall was built in 1920. Before that Whist Drives had been held in the Granary at Marton Hall Farm. Over the years an extra room was built on to the old Hall with money raised by doing Pantomimes in the hall. Then in the late 1990s a large amount of work was needed to be done on the hall and there were insufficient funds. What’s more, it was known that the building contained asbestos. So it was decided to apply to the National Lottery for funding. After many letters and forms to fill in and Lottery representatives coming to see the Hall as it was, we were told that we would have to find or raise £120,000 ourselves before they would consider providing any money. The committee then started to arrange money raising events. As well as sponsored walks and holding other events, some of the money was raised through grants and some by things such as collecting newspaper and taking it to a collection depot to get money. In the end we had made £126,000.

In the mean time Mr Graham Sheen and myself had to go to meetings to meet the Lottery staff in Birmingham. This was to see if we really needed the money and just what it was needed for. We put our case forward and they came to look over all our paper work to see if we had got it all in order and we had to show how the Hall was being run. We then asked Mr Eddie Davies if he would let us buy or have a little more land for the New Hall. He agreed and we went to a solicitor to get all the paper work done. We were then able to get architectural designs and drawings made for what we wanted. We asked three builders for quotations and put them forward to the Lottery. S. J. Roberts got the job. but we had to wait a long time before in 2009 we had the news that we had been awarded the money. This was £360,000 so were able to give the go ahead. The New Village Hall was finally opened in September 2010 by residents of the village."
